Planning a vacation can be stressful and time-consuming. How soon should you start? Let’s look at the main factors affecting your vacation planning window.
#1 – Location
Whether you are planning to travel domestically or internationally can have an impact on how far ahead you need to start planning. International destinations often require additional planning features such as passport or visa applications and possibly vaccinations. These can take some time to receive, so more time is necessary when planning international travel. My recommendation is to start planning international travel at least 6 months ahead of your desired travel time and at least 3 months ahead of time for most domestic trips.
#2 – Time of Year
Most travel locations have what is known as a high season for travel. This is the time when most travelers will be trying to spend time in a particular location, and it can be difficult to find places to stay or get into popular venues during these times. Prices are often higher during these times and the crowds in certain areas can make a location less enjoyable. Plus, you need to plan well in advance if you are looking at something like a popular cruise that has limited spots or activities that tend to fill quickly. If you have some flexibility in your travel dates, consider going during the shoulder season or off season to save on pricing and avoid the larger crowds. Just be sure to look at the average weather during these times in your desired destination – there may be a reason people avoid certain destinations at particular times!
#3 – Complexity of Trip & Number of Travelers
If you are planning a complicated trip involving multiple locations and activities, you need to ensure you give yourself plenty of time to plan out all the details. Factors like where you are going to stay, transportation from one place to another, how much time will be spent in each location or on each activity, and how much each item will cost all need to be taken into consideration. If you will be traveling with a large group of people, such as a family or class reunion group, you also need to make sure there will be enough rooms for everyone and activities that every person will enjoy.
